Veteran International swim coach Richard
Powers, presently a consultant for the
Philippine Amateur Swimming Association
(PASA), is looking at holding four other
swimming training camps within the year
as part of PASA’s efforts to upgrade the
technical skills of local coaches,
specially in regions outside Metro
Manila.
The American coach, who has been holding
seminars in the Philippines for the past
two decades, has already conducted
seminars in Dumaguete, Iloilo, Xavier
University in San Juan, and presently in
Ateneo de Manila, aside from holding a
special session for the Polo Tri Club.
“My objectives in this training camp are
two-fold – make young swimmers
understand why they need to train, at
the same time, with my style of teaching
where coaches take pro-active roles, I
want to teach coaches how to coach,
looking at it from an overall point of
view, combining both attitudinal and
skills training for the athletes,” said
Powers.
He has coached the national teams of
Ecuador, Venezuela, Israel, Kuwait,
Malaysia, and Brazil where among his
protégés was world-record holder Ricardo
Prado who broke the existing norm then
in the 400IM in the 1982 World Swimming
Championship.
