Amid the postponement of the Asean Para Games and the cancellation of some Para Games Qualifiers, there is one great news for the Filipino differently-abled athletes!
The International Paralympic Committee has confirmed the allocation or qualification of Ernie Gawilan to the August 25 to September 6 Tokyo Paralympic Games.
Ph Para Swimming coach Tony Ong bared this to Radyo Pilipinas. The notification was received by coach Ong last Friday, February 14. He forwarded it to the PH Paralympic Committee to facilitate the needed acknowledgements for the use of the said allocation.
The one Tokyo Para swimming slot was given to the Philippines in spite of its failure to compete at the Singapore World Para Qualifier, which was cancelled due to the corona virus outbreak.
Top Para-swimmer Ernie Gawilan alongside Garry Bejino, Arnel Aba and Roland Sabido have already earned Paralympic Qualifying points at the 2018 Asian Para Games and 2019 World Para Championships in London.
Gawilan, who first qualified at the 2016 Rio Paralympics, will again be the PH’s representative to the Tokyo Games since he earned most of the Qualifying points.
However, Gawilan needs to compete in one more Para Qualifier to re-classify his disability before formalizing his entry to the Tokyo Para Games.
Coach Ong and the PH Para Committee with help from the World Para Swimming, are now looking for a competition in Europe.
The Ph Para swimming coaching staff will also bring Bejino and the rest to the next Qualifier with the intent of grabbing additional Tokyo Para Games allocations, since all of them have met the qualifying standards but need more points.
