History of Philippine Aquatics’ SEA Games performance

The first edition of the Southeast Asian Games, previously known as Southeast Asian Peninsular Games, was held in Bangkok Thailand in 1959.

It was only in it’s 9th edition in 1977, the year where the games was officially changed to Southeast Asian Games, that Philippines started to participate.

This year, in the 30th edition of the Southeast Asian Games, marks as our 23rd participation at this prestigious biennial meet in the region.

This year also marks as our fourth time to host the SEA Games, which we first hosted in 1981, then in 1991 and in 2005.

Since joining in 1977, Philippines went home without a Gold Medal six times, of the twenty-two times we have participated.

First zero gold medal was in 1999, after the retirement of Raymond Papa, and then in the following SEA Games in 2001.

With the entry of Miguel Molina in the Philippine Swimming Team in year 2003, Philippines managed to score gold medals from 2003 to 2009.

But when Molina retired in 2011, Philippine Swimming has never won a Gold medal for the past four editions.

The second time we hosted the SEA Games, in year 1991, was the year where Philippine Swimming won the most number of gold medals in SEA Games history.

SEA Games legends Eric Buhain and Akiko Thomson won seven of the 10 gold medals; with Buhain winning 5 individual gold medals and a gold in the relay, while Thomson winning two gold medals.

Leo Najera and Lee Conception contributed a gold each.

Below is Philippine’s medal performance in all aquatic sports since we first joined SEA Games in 1977.
