Top backstrokers narrowly miss junior worlds’ semifinal appearance in Budapest

Philippine swimming’s top male Backstrokers, Jaden Christian Olson and Jerard Dominic Jacinto, narrowly missed a semifinal appearance at the 7th FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary Thursday afternoon.

Olson, the National record holder of 50m Back, clocked 26.18 in heat 6 of the Men’s 50m Backstroke prelims; while Jacinto, the national record holder of the 100m Back, finished the 50m Back prelims with 26.34

Among 85 swimmers entered in the 50m Back event, Olson and Jacinto ranked 20th and 25th respectively, narrowly missing a semifinal appearance.

Only top 16 swimmers were advancing to the semifinal round.

Brazil’s Farjado Figueiredo took the last semifinal spot (16 place) with 26.08 time.

It was a heartbreaking moment for Olson who just clocked the current national record of 26.00 two weeks ago. Had he duplicated his performance, he could have been the second Filipino swimmer to advance to the semifinals at the Junior World Championships.

First and only Filipino swimmer who have advanced to the semifinal round at the Junior Worlds is PH Sprint King, Daniel Coakley, who made a semifinals appearances in both 50m Free and 50m Fly in the first edition of the championships in Brazil.

Meanwhile, Desirae Aubrey Mangaoang clocked 1:12.21 in the Women’s 100m Breaststroke prelims, enough to place 30th among 68 top junior swimmers from around the world; while Miguel Barreto finished the Men’s 800m Freestyle prelims in 8:37.12, enough to place 43rd among 52 swimmers.

Olson and Jacinto’s times in 50m Back, and Mangaoang’s time in 100m Breast are the new times to beat for a slot at this year’s 2019 SEA Games national team.

Final qualifying meet for this year’s SEA Games is the 1st Philippine National Open Swimming Championships this August 31 to September 3, 2019 at the NCC Aquatic Center in Tarlac.

Fourth day of action in Budapest features only Jean-Pierre Khouzam swimming in 50m Fly event. The team will have a busier schedule on Saturday.
