Athena Chang sets third junior PH swim record in Singapore Nationals


Athena Shannessa Chang set her third junior Philippine swimming national record at the Liberty Insurance 50th Singapore National Age Group Swimming Championships Saturday evening.

In the evening finals of the Women’s 200m Freestyle event, Chang of Swimfast Aquatic Club, stormed her way to another record breaking performance, this time erasing Naomi Locala’s 13 & Under Girls junior record of 2:13.17 with her new record time of 2:11.39

This was her third 13 & Under junior record this week, after setting a 9:31.23 record in 800m Free last Tuesday and 4:40.43 record in 400m Free last Thursday.

Her new record of 2:11.30 in 200m Free also hit the QTB of the 2019 SEA Age Group Swimming Championships.

She placed 5th overall in the 13-14 Girls 200m Free finals.

Olympian Jasmine Alkhaldi grabbed the bronze of the Women’s 200m Free event, 18 & Over division, clocking 2:03.92 in the superfinals.

She also snatched another bronze in the Women’s 50m Fly event (18 & Over Division) with 27.55 clocking.

Meanwhile, another fast rising swimmer Miguel Barreto clinched the bronze medal of the 200m Free event, 15-17 Division, after clocking a new best time of 1:55.28

Barreto last year broke the 200m Free and 400m Free 14-15 junior records, and has continued to trim down his times this season.

Filipino swimmers who finished among the Top 10 of their respective Age-Group after the evening finals were 13-year-old Athena Chang (5th place in 200m Free / 2:11..39), 21-year old Romina Rafaelle Gavino (5th in 200m Breast / 2:58.89), 14-year old Jalil Sephraim Taguinod (6th place in Breast / 2:38.36), 26-year old Jessie Lacuna (6th place in 200m Free / 1:54.86 and 11th in 50m Fly / 26.11), 14-year old Marco Daos (7th place in 200m Free / 2:04.98 and 50m Fly / 28.21), and 16-year old Thanya Dela Cruz (10th place in 200m Breast / 2:51.93)

Other Filipino swimmers who have qualified in the evening finals on day two of the championships were Andrea Ann Tiffany Ngui (50m Fly / 29.99), Shannen Tan (50m Fly / 30.17), Anya Austriaco (50m Fly / 31.07), Kirsten Tan (50m Fly /31.23), Monique Ramas-Uypitching (200m Breast / 3:08.83) and Ethan Chua (200m Breast / 2:44.35).

After day four of the Singapore Age Group Nationals, Team Philippines has so far won 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 8 Bronze medals; plus one senior Philippine National record and six Junior National records.

Jacinto is Team Philippines lone gold medalist at this year’s Singapore Nationals, topping the 18 & Over of both 50m and 100m Back events.

Marco Daos and Athena Chang took home the 13-14 Division silver medals of the 100m Fly and 800m Free events respectively, bronze for Miguel Barreto in 200m Free 15-17 Division, and also bronze for Chloe Daos in 800m Free 18 & Over Division.

Jasmine Alkhaldi has already collected five bronze medals in the 18 & Over Division, placing third in 100m Free, 200m Free, 100m Back, 50m Fly and 100m Fly events.

Jacinto is the lone swimmer who has erased a senior national record (50m Back), while at the same time clocking two junior national records in the 16-18 Age Group (50m and 100m Back)

Chang now has three 13 & Under Age Group junior national records, resetting the 200m, 400m and 800m Free records; while one junior national record for Tirol (50m Breast 16-18 Age Group).
