SEA Age-Group Swimming Championships bound Samantha Therese Coronel and Bhay Maitland Newberry clocked a new Philippine Junior National record each on last day of the 2016 Batang Pinoy National Championships held in Tagum, Davao del Norte last Tuesday.
Fourteen-year-old Coronel, the current 14-15 Girls 50m Backstroke Philippine record holder, has successfully reset her own record to 31.28 en route to winning the Batang Pinoy gold medal in the Girls 13-17 Division.
This is the second time she broke this record this season; resetting Catherine Bondad’s 31.89 record to 31.84 at the LC National Championships last July.
On the other hand, thirteen-year-old Newberry took the silver in the 50m Backstroke 13-17 Girls Division, and at the same time clinched her first Philippine Junior national record.
Her silver medal time of 31.62 in the 50m Back event is now the new 13 & Under Girls PH junior record; resetting Jules Katherine Ong’s record time of 32.01, clocked at last year’s LC Nationals.
With Coronel and Newberry’s new Philippine junior records, both tankers are now touted to be medal contenders in the 50m Back event at the SEA Age-Group Swimming Championships next month in Bangkok, Thailand.
Meanwhile, while six more Batang Pinoy meet records were broken on the last day of the championships.
Baguio City’s Maenard Batnag, who broke the 100m Back and 200m Fly records (12 & Under Division) on day one of the championships, has added one more record under his belt.
He set a new record in the 200m IM event with his gold medal time of 2:31.08; erasing Raphael Henrico Santos’ record of 2:33.68.
Janelle Alisa Lin on the other hand also broke the 200m IM (12 & Under Division) record of Erin Castrillo, with her new record time of 2:35.87.
This is Lin’s third Batang Pinoy meet record, after breaking the 200m Free and 200m Back records last Monday.

4x50m Free [ Boys 13 – 17 ] : 01:48.19 – Koronadal City (Symon Lanz Ilustry, Joel John Gerson, Lean Ysidore Dagum and Kevin Troy Dagum.
Please note when a 16 or 17 year-old swimmer breaks the “13-15 Division” Batang Pinoy Record, PinoySwimming dot Com retains the standing “13-15 record”, and puts up a “16-17 Division” record. Thus, in the updated Batang Pinoy records, there are some events already that have 16-17 Division records.
