The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has announced major changes in the 2016 edition of the Batang Pinoy National Championships.
Set on November 27 to December 2, 2016 at Tagum, Davao del Norte, this year’s edition will have no qualifying legs; thus all swimmers from all over the country can see action at the national finals.
Apart from this major change, PSC has also changed the age eligibility of the athletes, making this national event a 17 & Under championships.
It is not clear though if there will still be a 12 & Under age-bracket; or even 12 & under swimmers will be competing against 13-17 year old swimmers.
Batang Pinoy is now a national competition program for children 17 years old and below. The program encourages all local government executives to invest in the development of sports within their respective areas. It also aims to widen the base to select potential athletes for future national and international sports competitions, primarily the quadrennial Youth Olympic Games.
The Batang Pinoy National Championships is also open to all Filipino around the world, whether by birth or naturalized. Fil-Foreign swimmers may join the said championships provided he/she represents a particular LGU.
For this event, the Commission shall grant a sponsorship subsidy amounting to Three Thousand Pesos (P3,000) per athlete, on a first-come, first-served basis.
