After clinching his first and second Philippine Junior National Records last Saturday in the 50m Butterfly and 200m Free events, 78th UAAP Swimming Championships’ Rooking of the Year – Rafael Barreto – smashed two more PH junior records in the Boys 14-15 age category on the last day of the championships, Sunday, at the Rizal Memorial Swimming Pool in Manila.

Ateneo’s Barreto secured his third PH junior record in the morning preliminary of the 50m Backstroke event where he topped the heats with a new junior record time of 28.67.

His new 50m Backstroke best time has reset Jose Mari Sebastian’s Boys 14-15 PH Junior record time of 29.02 clocked last year.

Later in the morning preliminary yesterday, Barreto again delivered another record breaking swim in the 50m Freestyle event, his third PH Junior National Record.

He topped the morning preliminary of the 50m Free heats with 24.44 clocking, breaking the 24.90 Boys 14-15 PH Junior national record of Ronald Guiriba and Mark Rominquit.

Guiriba set the old record in 2002, which was later equaled by Rominquit in 2013 at the NCAA Championships.

Barreto trimmed down his 24.44 record in the evening finals, setting a new 50m Free junior national record of 24.43 en route to a golden finish.

Meanwhile, Seth Isaak Martin who has erased the 17-year-old Boys 13 & Under 100m Backstroke junior national record yesterday, delivered another junior record breaking swim on the last day of the UAAP Championships.

This time, Martin successfully trimmed down his 50m Back Boys 13 & Under PH Junior National Record of 29.58 to 29.57 at the morning preliminary.

A total of eight Philippine Junior National Records were broken at the 4-day UAAP Swimming Championships, with Rafael Barreto breaking four records in the Boys 14-15 age-group, namely the 50m Free, 200m Free, 50m Back and 50m Fly.

Twelve year-old Camille Lauren Buico of University of Santo Tomas broke the 50m and 100m Butterfly Girls 13 & Under junior records; while Seth Martin broke the 100m Back Boys 13 & Under junior record and reset his 50m Back junior record.

Barreto and Buico are new additions to the elite few who have already engraved their names in the junior record books, with Buico being the youngest, at twelve.
